The 30th annual Fairbury Girls Softball tournament, traditionally held Memorial weekend, is expected to be the largest in at least a decade. The tournament is scheduled for May 28-29 at the Fairbury Softball Complex. Monday, May 30, is reserved for a rain date.

“The Memorial Weekend Tournament is a long-standing tradition in our community,” said Lana Likens, Fairbury Girls Softball president and this year’s tournament director. “It is a great early-season tournament for teams to practice their skills; it is a boost to Fairbury’s economy as it brings many players, coaches and spectators to town; and it is a fund-raiser for Fairbury Girls Softball.”

This year there are 36 teams registered for the tournament. Likens said that some teams travel each day from home, some teams stay in motels in Fairbury or the surrounding area, and some teams camp in area camp grounds. She said most teams have some down time to check out local stores and restaurants, and many fill up with gas while they are in town.

Likens said with this many teams, it is estimated that there could be well over 1,000 guests in town each day including players, coaches and spectators.

This year, the Jefferson County Visitors Committee and Fairbury Chamber of Commerce are assisting with programs, which will include a listing of local restaurants and their hours on Saturday and Sunday to help promote local business.

For more information about the tournament, please contact Likens at (402) 587-0432.
